Have you wondered what it’s like to be Chewbacca or Yoda? Well, now’s your chance to step into their shoes for the latest saga “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”.
I got invited to attend the launch, and also got the scoop from Dan Sullivan, who designs whimsical shoes under his own label Irregular Choice and has launched the Limited Edition Star Wars Collection. It is as fun and quirky as the regular Irregular Choice shoes.
With the UK-based designer shoes, channel your inner Darth Vader or Yoda. So cool, shoes never looked, indeed. Or perhaps you’d rather walk on “shoe-baccas” and save the “lightsaber heels” for the boardroom battles.
Heart and Sole
The company founder and creator decided to step away from the conventional to develop one-of-a-kind footwear that will appeal to men and women who want something out of the ordinary. Enter, Irregular Choice, which created the famous ice cream cone heels, and set a trend in its previous Star Wars line.
The current collection, it does not disappoint. The line features 12 different styles of flats, heels and boots.
Slip into R2-D2, C-3PO, Yoda, Han Solo, Princess Leia, Darth Vader and Storm Troopers stylish footwear. Launched worldwide in October, a pair costs anywhere from $229 to $549.
Sullivan who stopped by Singapore recently, established Irregular Choice in 1999 to stand out from the crowd. He had noticed that the footwear market was becoming very neutral and black, yet there was a global demand for something different and more individual, something to wear with pride.
“I have always been a big Star Wars fan and having had huge success with our seasonal character heels over the years it made sense to try and explore new collaborations” he tells PREMIER of his latest Star Wars creations, adding “the collection itself has been in development since last year.”
“One of my earliest memories was of me age 9 in a cinema with my Dad watching ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ when it was first released. My dad loved telling the story of how I was chewing gum, and every time it got exciting I would chew super fast. I’ve been a big fan ever since that special day.”
These bold shoes are reserved for the biggest of Star Wars fans as character faces cover toes, are printed on soles, and even constitute the heels. There are flats that pay tribute to Darth Vader, C-3PO, and two of the Dark Sides most famous members of the Sith in Vader and a Stormtrooper.
Oxfords are printed with the movie’s famous robot duo, C-3PO and R2-D2, and Jedi like Yoda and Luke Skywalker. Yoda and Vader also serve as the heel on a pair of shoes, while Chewbacca was morphed into his own fuzzy boots. Several styles, like a pair of heels that are held up by an R2-D2 figurine, are already sold out and others are moving quickly.
“We actually approached this process the opposite way around. We designed and developed the characters first making sure all Star Wars characters were signed off by Disney for the relevant episodes of the film. I felt I wanted to develop the characters first and make sure all looks and moulds were the best they could be and then I started to work on the uppers, trims and overall patterns to accompany the feel of the style. Some of the characters feature on the same style of the shoe, so it was important we incorporated these characters onto our flat styles too,” Sullivan explains to PREMIER.
Fashion Slaves Freed
If you’re eager to feel the Force but a little worried about how fashion supersedes practicality, Sullivan says he has received feedback from fans expressing surprise at how comfortable some of the high heels felt. But just to be sure, I slipped my Boba feet into some Shoe-baccas. Sure enough, the Irregular Choice footwear are comfy, as they are quirky.
“We take passion in trying to make concept heels as wearable as possible,” Sullivan says. “This collection is not only designed for avid fans, but anyone who loves creativity and fun. Our die-hard Irregular Choice fans, who may not be Star Wars fans, will be introduced to it and Star Wars fans will be introduced to Irregular Choice and what we do. We feel it targets people that appreciate having a unique collaboration.”
“I am a strong believer in creating shoes our fans know they will not see other people wearing down their local. With Star Wars, I knew each style would be a super limited edition from the beginning, so these styles will be even more exclusive. It’s also very important for me to make sure this collection hits affordable price points so that the few luckyIrregular Choice or Star Wars fans can have their own Cinderella moment”.
The 14-piece collection also includes limited-edition insoles prints and collectible boxes for Star Wars devotees to help celebrate the latest sci-fi fantasy film instalment.
Luckily, these shoes are not in a galaxy far, far away. You can get them simply by heading over to Superspace at Orchard Gateway, or online from the Irregular Choice web shop. Grab them while you get the chance because they will be going faster than the Millennium Falcon into hyperdrive (when it functions properly).
