Close to 1,000 boxes of Acuvue contact lenses recalled in Singapore

Close to 1,000 boxes of Acuvue contact lenses here have been recalled after failing to meet “quality standards”, said Johnson & Johnson Vision Care in a statement issued on Monday (Oct 23).

The affected products are 929 boxes of fortnightly disposable contact lenses. They have since been retrieved from retailers here.

A Johnson & Johnson Vision Care spokesperson told TODAY that the products recalled include the Acuvue Oasys lot number L002QH9 as there is “a potential” for brush bristle to be found within the small blister-like containers which hold the contact lenses.

Also recalled are the Acuvue Oasys for Astigmatism lot numbers B00GW4Z and B00HRMG, which contained lenses being “off power”. “Off power” lenses cause distortion or blurriness for the consumer, added the spokesperson.

Lot numbers can be found on the back of the outer box or on the cover foil of the blister-like containers.

“At Johnson & Johnson Vision, our top priority is patient safety and we hold ourselves to high standards for product quality and customer satisfaction…Importantly, no significant health risks have been reported due to these issues,” said a statement by the manufacturer.

Emphasising that it has taken measures to ensure that these issues “do not recur”, the company said it has identified the root causes that led to the quality issues and has taken corrective measures.

“We have worked closely and quickly with Health Sciences Authority, Singapore Optometric Association and Eye Care Professionals…In partnership with Eye Care Professionals, we are committed to continuing to offer high standards of eye health and product quality in Singapore,” it added.

For those who owns the affected products bought in Singapore, the company advised consumers to consult the eye car professional which they bought the product from. While those who bought the products abroad can contact Acuvue Support at 800-101-3130 or write to support@acuvue.com.sg.

Last week, four types of Acuvue contact lenses have been recalled in Japan due to tainted contact lens solution.

Meanwhile in Taiwan, several batches from four types of contact lenses products were also recalled due to possible quality problems.
